F-58 External boosters by Venom800TT F-58 External boosters by Venom800TT
And now I finally settled for a design for external boosters for F-58. Cannot attain orbit with this setup, but it does allow for atmospheric "skipping", which dramatically increases range.
The boosters are linear aerospike rocket motors with LOX and H2 tanks built into the booster pack. Each booster contains 10,000 lbs of fuel/oxidizer, which is enough for up to 100 seconds of burn time. Maximum thrust for each booster is 65,000 lbs. The boosters are generally retained for the duration of a mission, though can be jettisoned in an emergency.

love the look and the concept, but wouldn't the weight of the boosters hinder performance once they are use up? to me it would make more sense to jettison them once the fuel was used up

Depends on the mission profile. Long range strike missions generally won't require any real maneuvering, as the flight path would essentially be straight. Trying to turn at the speeds this beast will be traveling would span entire countries lol. The boosters can be jettisoned if you HAVE to dogfight, but like I said, that is more of an emergency thing. If someone gets close enough to dogfight a Hammer, someone dun messed up big time. The boosters are also used for ASAT missions to intercept Geo-Sync altitude satellites such as com sats. Still a sub-orbital mission profile though.
The boosters when empty weigh 2000 lbs each, which shouldn't impact performance much.

This is a TAV... Only a few steps away from being a space fighter... Nice!
